Do you really understand why and how to use it efficiently?  There are so many produces to pick from.

First of all, Health Canada indicates that anything coming into contact with skin needs to be washed and disinfected or sterilized.  That can range from light switches to nippers.

The best way to prevent contamination is to use disposable items such as birchwood sticks, gauze and single use files.  As for our implements, Health Canada recognizes a variety of liquid solutions that consist of a bactericide, fungicide and virucide.  Items should be washed vigorously prior to immersion.  Once the disinfection/sterilization procedure is completed, all items should be stored to prevent air particle contamination.  As for hard surfaces they should be washed and a disinfectant should be applied for the allotted time and then removed.

There are so many products to pick from.  These products need to breakdown or dissolve the cellular proteins of pathenogenic bacteria.

• Most disinfectants are compared to phenolics (phenol-carbolic acid, which is extremely poisonous and must be diluted) to determine their strength.  This process is call “phenol coefficient”.  Phenol is known as that “hospital smell” and it acts as a disinfectant by disrupting the cell wall and also works as a crytoplasmic poison.
• Isopropyl Alcohol acts by denaturation of proteins (splits the molecular structure) but it evaporates quickly and, unless a surface is completely saturated for 15 minutes, it is ineffective.
• Iodophors can die or damage surfaces with its active ingredient being iodine.  Quaternary ammonium compounds work like phenols but they don’t kill all bacteria.
• Glutaraldhydes is aldehyde and being inhaled in small doses can be extremely dangerous.

All of these products, if not used properly, can be health hazards.

Some of the products that I’m acquainted with and recommend are Accel and Ultronics.  I feel confident that they are doing the job.  These two products are so versatile acting as both a wet sterilization procedure and a surface cleaner.

Accels’ active ingredient is activated hydrogen peroxide and they have different products that have a higher or lower percentage of concentration.  The Accel TB wipes have a film between two layers that allows one side to be used for washing and the other to disinfect.  The Accel CS20 is cost effective because it is active up to 14 days in a sterilizer and it only takes 20 minutes to sterilize my instruments.

The Ultronics Ultracare Disinfectant Cleaner Concentrate is a dual-quaternary disinfectant which just needs to be adjusted and diluted to be used as a wet sterilization procedure or as a surface disinfectant.

The most common infection is usually seen as the polish is removed. But, there are other ailments that can mask infection, too.

What is infection? Psoriasis under nails looks like an infection.  It has pit marks and the hyponychium is recessed.  Sometimes that void or air pocket between the plate and the nail bed can be mistaken as an infection.  When cleaning the free edge, if the excavator starts to remove nail particle then notify the client to start using Vité 20,  antifungal cream formulated with undecylenic acid.

Onychomycosis: bacteria is trapped between the plate and the bed and the nail starts to waste away

The most common infections are Onycholysis and Onychomycosis.  This nail is thick, the hyponychium is recessed and there is evidence of discolouration (brown, green or dark yellow) under the nail. In most cases there is a foul smell.  This client needs to seek the medical attention of a Podiatrist.

Diabeties is insidious.  Due to the complication it causes on the immune system and circulation, these clients require specific care.  If a client should be cut during a procedure, the injury takes much longer to heal.  Thus, the client is more prone to infection and potential amputation.  Doctors will refer the clients to a Podiatrist or a foot nurse if there are complications.

We can work on ingrown toes nails using instruments such as lifters and ingrown nippers. For inverted nails that are clawed, folded or tubular these nails are regularly prone to inflammation and infection and in some severe cases a Podiatrists will remove the nail.

There are many types of disorders that we can treat.  Our scope of practice is to hydrate the skin and maintain healthy foot care with a splash of colour!
